March 1983 - Charles Xavier recruits a new generation of teenage mutants and begins to train them at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
December 1985 - In Paris, Magneto is put on trial for crimes against humanity. Professor X and the X-Men attend. Magneto is mostly exhonerated of his charges due to his second infancy. The court is attacked by the Von Strucker twins, and Professor X goes into cardiac arrest.
Before he is taken into space to be treated by Empress Lilandra and the Starjammers, Professor X asks Magneto to take his place as headmaster of the the institute.
January 1986 - Magneto's installment as headmaster causes a schism at the school. Many X-Men and students leave the institute at this time. The X-Men who remain are: Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, and Wolverine.
January 28, 1986 - The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
February 1986 - X-Factor, a private security firm that specializes in capturing mutants begins operating. Unknown to the public, this organization is really run by the original X-Men. Their mission is to rescue mutants, while posing as mutant hunters. (Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl)
March 1986 - Rachel Summers the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey from an alternate future arrives. She is the current host of the Phoenix Force.
April 26, 1986 - Chernobyl disaster
June 1986 - Due to increasing tensions in human-mutant relations, the Senate Subcomittee on Super Human Affairs begins more aggressively pursuing mutant criminals. Because of increased pressure, the Brotherhood of Mutants (led by Mystique) become government agents, in exchange for amnesty. Their name is changed to Freedom Force.
September 1986 - The X-Men battle Nimrod, a super-sentinel from the future sent back in time to destroy all mutants.
Novermber 3, 1986 - Investigations into the Iran-Contra Affair begin.
November 1986 - The Mutant Massacre - Hundreds of mutants are killed in New York City, when Mister Sinister orders his Marauders to attack the the underground mutant community known as the Morlocks. The X-men rush to their defense, but Colossus, Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler are seriously injured. They are put into suspended animation until a means to heal them is discovered.
March 1987 - Colossus, Kitty Pryde, and Nightcrawler are sent to Muir Island to be treated by Dr. Moira MacTaggert.
June 12, 1987 - During a visit to Berlin, Germany, U.S. President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall.
February 1988 - Collapse of the Soviet Union
March 1988 - The X-Men are killed on live television, when they sacrifice their lives to defeat the being known as the Adversary. There is a small surge in mutant acceptance, as the team is posthumously regarded as heroes. Unknown to the public, they are brought back to life by the omniversal guardian, Roma. They choose to relocate to the Australian outback and operate secretly.
August 1988 - The Iran-Iraq War ends.
September 1988 - The Evolutionary War - The High Evolutionary unleashes attacks all over the world to guide the way of human evolution. But he is defeated by the Avengers.
October 1988 - Believing that the X-Men are dead, Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler join Excalibur, a British team of super-mutants.
November 8, 1988 - George H. W. Bush elected president of the United States.
December 1988 - Madelyne Pryor the Goblyn Queen, leads an invasion of Earth by demons from Limbo. The X-Men and X-Factor unite to stop her. The invasion ends with Madelyne Pryor's apparent death. But during one of the skirmishes, Xavier's mansion is destroyed by Sinister and his Marauders.
February 2, 1989 - Soviet-Afghan War ends.
March 24, 1989 - The Exxon Valdez oil spill.
May 1989 - Believing the X-Men to be dead and with the mansion destroyed, Magneto disbands the school and quits as headmaster. Magneto joins the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. The remaining New Mutants go their separate ways.
June 4, 1989 - The Tiananmen Square Massacre.
July 9, 1989 - The U.S. President authorizes the limited use of Sentinels to hunt down extremely dangerous mutants.
July 20, 1989 - The Deviant Lord Ghuar attempts to ressurect the god Set, but is defeated by the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
August 1989 - Donald Pierce and his Reavers attack the X-Men's base in the Australian outback. Wolverine escapes with the help of Jubilee. All of the other X-Men disappear.
September 1989 - Donald Pierce and his Reavers attack Muir Island. Moira MacTaggert forms a new X-Men team to continue Professor X's dream.
November 1989 - In Cairo, a new mutant manifests his powers and goes on a rampage. The Muir Island X-Men clash with Reavers, and are able to capture the mutant.
November 1989 - Terrax the Terrible attacks New York City, but is defeated by a new group of young X-Men.
December 1989 - The U.S. invasion of Panama. Both governments use super-human assets during the brief conflict.
December 31, 1989 - Maggia crime boss Hammerhead is murdered in Miami, Florida. It is later suspected to the be the work of the Punisher.
January 6, 1990 - Magneto attacks the U.S. Senate, but he is stopped by the Muir Island X-Men. A few days later, the U.S. passes the Mutant Registration Act.
January 10, 1990 - The X-Men and Genoshan forces attack a U.S. mutant detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
January - March 1990 - Mutant terrorist attacks become more frequent, as the Mutant Liberation Front, the X-Terminators, and the New Brotherhood attack detention centers across the globe. Governments increase their counter-mutant measures in response. The government of Genosha sends taskforces to other nations to help them with their "mutant problem." The Reavers increase their attacks, murdering scores of mutants. Other anti-mutant groups, such as the Purifiers, the Right and the Friends of Humanity have become emboldened. It seems like humanity is on the brink of a human-mutant war.
April 1, 1990 - Savant comes to Muir Island.
