Biography
Dagial was born in Korvosa, the child of an unwed dressmaker. Calling herself, Alma, she took refuge in the home of Seever and Willa Hardbottle when the time came to deliver her son. The Hardbottles were not acting out of kindness. Seever had lavicious hopes for young Alma, while Willa had plans to make money with her. But once Alma recovered from childbirth, she disappeared, leaving her halfling baby behind with the Hardbottles.
Seever Hardbottle was a poor fisherman, who drank too much. He was a coward and was ruled by his wife. He raised halfling riding dogs on the side, but he was lazy with his efforts. He also treasured a sealed magical bottle that he had fished out of the sea. But he never could decide whether to open it, afraid that it would either bring him great fortune or be the death of him.
Willa Hardbottle worked as a bar maid at the Broken Knight tavern. Originally from Magnimar, she hated her husband and hated her adopted son even more. She was immoral and cruel and always hatching a scheme. She spent her spare time building a detailed model of the dream house that she hoped to build one day when she struck it rich.
At the age of...
1 - Even at this early age, the Hardbottles recognized that Dagial was a talented halfling boy and encouraged him to perform.
5 - Willa Hardbottle locks Dagial into a closet. The trauma of this awakens an innate ability in Dagial. He is able to cast Mage Hand and Unseen Servant and he opens the door. Willa discovers his new ability and is delighted. She begins making him perform singing, dancing and magic tricks at the Broken Sword to earn money. The patrons adore the little halfling.
11 - At the age of 11, one of Dagial's performances attracts the attention of Ativer the Wizard. He invites the boy to perform at the Acadamae, while he is secretly being evaluated for magical aptitude. Something goes wrong and in the resulting explosion, 's throat is torn out. Days later, when Dagial awakens, he learns that Ativer has crafted him a new magical throat, made of flexible gold, inset with a glowing gem. Dagial's voice is even more beautiful than before. 12 - The Hardbottle's fortunes change as Dagial's local fame grows. He is featured at all of the high-end inns and begins performing for the Nobility of Korvosa. But despite the new wealth, Willa spends it as quickly as it is earned.
Willa instructs Dagial in the art of pickpocketing and orders her to begin stealing from the wealthy households he performs in.
During one performance, he steals a magical ring of Water Walking. But he hides it from Willa.
13 - Dagial has had enough of the Hardbottle's abuse and runs off. He is quickly recruited by Gaedran Lamm, a petty crime boss, who has been watching him. He continues to send him to Noble houses to perform and steal.
14 - Dagial is caught picking pockets by Lord Danis of House Halesi. Danis stabs Dagial, and the halfling loses his left eye.
15 - Dagial is noticed by Nybel the Tusk, a crime boss more powerful than Gaedran. Nybel takes Dagial into his organization and Gaedran is furious, but can do nothing.
17 - Nybel has a scheme to swindle Bulbo Goodberry, a wealthy merchant who has recently been elevated to nobility. Bulbo is becoming senile, so Dagial is able to pose as his long lost son. Dagial begins syphoning the Goodberry fortune off to Nybel.
18 - Bulbo, dies and his relatives of Bulbo reveal Dagial to be an imposter. They show proof that the Goodberry's actual son was someone else, Bebo Goodberry. Dagial is accused of murdering Bulbo. Dagial is jailed for a time, but convinces the magistrate that he is innocent. He is set free, but his reputation is damaged.
21 - Dagial tires of crime and flees from Nybel the Tusk. He joins the Navy and becomes a member of the all halfling ship, the Sea Imp. He serves under Captain Olo Applehill.
Early in his career, Dagial is responsible for the deaths of 9 of his crewmembers. He encouraged the ship to attack the famous pirate ship known as the Tempest. But it was a suicide mission.
22 - While on shore leave in Korvosa, Ativer the Wizard presents Dagial with a new magical eye. ( As a gem of seeing 1/day)
Dagial's skill and prowess grow and during a great sea battle, he distinguishes himself. He is promoted to Petty Officer.
25 - His term of service with the navy is ended and he is discharged. Dagial returns to his favorite inn, the Laughing Spirits. But there he is spotted by one of Lamm's Lambs. His drink is drugged. When he leaves the inn, he is confronted by Gaedran and his thugs. He is tortured and beaten almost to death. His new eye is gouged out.
Gaedran throws him into the Vaults, Korvosa's sewers to be eaten by the creatures there. But Dagial survives and crawls out somehow.
Days later, Dagial awakens in the House of Everlight, a small chapel to Sarenrae, being tended by the nuns there.
When he awakes, he finds a Harrow card of The Marriage is lying on his chest.
CONNECTION TO GAEDRAN
Recruited Dagial into Lamm's Lambs. Gaedran used him to perform at rich houses and steal from them. Gaedran saw it as a betrayal when Nybel the Tusk stole him away. Gaedran gets his revenge on him when he leaves the Navy, plucking his eye out, and dumping him in the Vaults to die.
