Our game begins in a region of Northwest Varisia called the Velashu Uplands.
To the west of this area is the mysterious Mierani Forest. For time untold, the Elves of the Mierani have forbidden anyone from entering their forest. And the Elves have rarely left its shadowy woods.
But now something has changed. Over the last few years, the mysterious forest has grown darker and more menacing. Shadows and dark things have begun creeping out of it and into the lands of the nearby folk. Horrible creatures have been found sneaking through the surrounding kingdoms. When investigators have been sent to the Mierani Forest, the Elves have turned them away.
But now, the Mierani Elves have broken their silence. A letter has been delivered to each of the neighboring peoples, asking for a representative to visit their Queen.
Your character will be the person chosen to visit the Elf Queen and see what she has to say.
Below is a description of the neighboring lands.
Please pick one of these to be from. (If you have other ideas, please let me know; such as an Axe Clan Shoanti Barbarian from the Calphiak Mountains; a scoundrel from Riddleport, etc. )
Also, as a 7th level character, you are one of the most powerful people from your area. Please answer three questions for me.
1) What is your role in your community?
2) What heroic thing have you done in the past? (In other words, why are you 7th level? What have you done to earn this?)
3) Why did the leader of these people choose you?
Please pick an area that you are a representative from the list below.
The Dwarves of the Red Mountains
A small hold of hard-working, but suspicious dwarves.
The Red Mountains of north-eastern Varisia are technically part of the Kodar range, but are different enough in character that they are given a separate name. Located north of the Velashu River and west of the Lurkwood, they are some of the shortest of Varisia's highlands. The soil is often a dark red due to its rich iron deposits. The mountains are mined by a few determined miners and used by a handfull of herdsmen who often combine forces to fend off attacks by the violent barbarians of the Nolands. These attacks have become more frequent and organized of late, and the people of the Red Mountains are beginning to get worried
The small dwarven hold of Kar-Noron sits at the mouth of the Velashu River. They are ruled by King Doren..
The Velashu River and Hillfolk
A idyllic, peaceful oasis of farms and small towns.
The Velashu River is one of the major rivers of northwestern Varisia. It winds a circuitous route from its source high in the Red Mountains past the Rift of Niltak, across the wide Velashu Uplands, and finally cuts through the edge of the Calphiak Mountains to flow into the Varisian Gulf at the city of Riddleport.
The people who live in the fertile lands between the river and the Red Mountains are under the protection of Lady Rowen of the Riverfolk. But also under her protection are smaller communities of gnomes and Halflings who live in the hills at the foot of the mountains. It is a peaceful land of farmers and river traders.
The Velashu Horse Lords
Think the Riders of Rohan combined with noble vikings
The Velashu Uplands are a hilly region of north-western Varisia located between the Velashu River on the one side and the combined border of the Mierani Forest and the Calphiak Mountains on the other. They are home to the famous horsemen of the same name, considered to be the finest horse breeders in all of Varisia.
The Horse Lords patrol the Uplands, constantly fighting the Nolander. They are ruled by King Randar.
The Elves of the Lurkwood
Strange elves living in a mysterious magic-warped forest.
Situated between the Red and Stony Mountains of northern Varisia, the Lurkwood has a bizarre reputation. It seems to have become unhinged from the normal passage of time, with trees displaying fall colors in spring, and stories of travelers venturing within, emerging much younger or older than when they entered. Whatever the truth may be, Lurkwood is a place best avoided.
The Elves under King Kalandil live along the far southern edge of the Lurkwood, where the strangeness is the least. But those who visit them claim they are even more fey and mysterious than normal elves. They are known for their skill in magic.
The Elven City of Meldorath which sits on the southern border of the Lurkwood.
